Owatonna Late Surge Topples Rockets
OWATONNA -- John Marshall — likely the youngest team in the Big Nine Conference — is still learning how to finish off games.
The Rockets couldn't quite polish things off Tuesday night as they fell 55-50 to solid Owatonna in a Big Nine game.
JM led 22-21 at intermission, but struggled some late in the second half.
"It was a tough one for us," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "We have a week to figure out how to take better care of the ball and get stops late in the game. We do that and we may have six more wins this year. Kids are working hard (but they) just need to finish games better."
JM (7-9 Big Nine, 10-14 overall) was led by eighth-grader Jamie Ruden with 16 points and junior Katelyn Rushton with 11.
Owatonna moved to 11-5 Big Nine and 15-8 overall.
The Huskies were paced by Sarah McCann's 13 points. Brooke Hrdlicka added 12.

Rockets Can't Hold Lead At Winona
WINONA -- John Marshall got off to a nice start but couldn't sustain it as it fell 51-45 to Winona in Big Nine Conference action.
The Rockets (7-9 Big Nine, 10-14 overall) built a 22-14 halftime lead.
"We got off to a good start but didn't build the lead we could have had — we didn't have a particularly good night shooting," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "Defensively we did some nice things (but) just looked a little tired in the second half."
JM was led by Katelyn Rushton with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Winona (7-9, 7-14) was paced by Ellen Blacklock with 13 points.

Sweet Valentine Win - Rockets Down Panthers
ROCHESTER -- Rochester John Marshall won for the third time in its last four games Tuesday night, this time beating rival Century 55-41 in Big Nine Conference girls basketball at JM.
JM (7-8 Big Nine, 10-13 overall) got a perfect shooting game from 6-foot eighth-grader Jamie Ruden. She finished 9-for-9 from the field and totaled 18 points, as well as five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Ruden was 7-for-7 in the first half, which ended with JM on top 32-19.
"(Ruden) made good decisions and got squared up on her shots," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said.
The Rockets also got a strong game from Katelyn Rushton with 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and six assists.
Century was led by Alyssa Lewis with 12 points. Kanani Asuncion added 11. The Panthers were plagued by poor shooting.
"It is tough to win when you shoot under 30 percent on field goals and free throws," Century coach Chris Stenzel said. "We will need to regroup and get to work on some things in practice."
JM got way up on Century early, leading 15-3.
Century slipped to 10-5, 13-9.

Rockets Blast Falcons
FARIBAULT -- Rochester John Marshall showed no mercy for winless Faribault, holding the Falcons to just six points in the first half of a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game on Friday night.
John Marshall had more than enough points for the win by halftime with a 35-6 lead.
"The girls played hard all night," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. "They did some nice things, probably most notable of which was 20 assists; that is a big number."
JM beat Faribault for the second time this season and improved to 9-13 overall and 6-8 in the conference. Faribault is 0-21, 0-14 in the Big Nine.
Katelyn Rushton had 15 points, six assists and four steals for JM. Megan Haynes had 11 points, and Nicole Fautsch had a team-high eight rebounds.
JM is home Tuesday against Century. Century won their first meeting, 68-55, in early December at Century.

East Continues To Dominate Big Nine
MANKATO -- Rochester John Marshall was unable to derail the Big Nine Conference leader on Friday night, losing 62-45 at Mankato East.
Mankato East built a double-digit lead by halftime and held it throughout the second half to beat JM for the second time this season.
Mankato East improved to 17-2 overall and 11-0 in the Big Nine Conference. JM is 8-13, 5-8 in the conference.
"We played a good team and they showed us why they are 17-2; good shooting and good size inside made it difficult for us to stop them," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said.
It was JM's third game in four days, and the Rockets were running low on energy.
"Hopefully it was a good learning experience and we can focus on what we need to do to keep improving and gear up for a good finish to the regular season and a strong run in the post season," Heiderscheit said.
Megan Haynes led JM with 16 points and five rebounds, and Katelyn Rushton had 10 rebounds.
JM has a less-busy week ahead, with its next game Friday at Faribault.

Rockets Claim One Point Win
ROCHESTER -- Megan Haynes made a free throw with seven seconds left to seal Rochester John Marshall's 47-46 win over Mankato West in a girls basketball game Thursday night at the JM gym.
Mankato West had enough time to scramble down court and lace a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it wasn't enough for the Scarlets.
"We did enough things right at the end to get the lead back and win," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit, whose Rockets held a small lead for most of the game but relinquished it late.
Haynes finished with 12 points, and Katelyn Rushton led the Rockets with 18 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists.
"Rushton had a nice game, and Allison Radke gave us some good minutes off the bench," Heiderscheit said. "The kids are getting better we just need some consistency. We had the fewest turnovers of any game this season."
Cara Christianson powered West with 27 points.
JM continues its busy week with its third game Friday night at Mankato East.

Mayo Too Strong Again
ROCHESTER -- Rochester Mayo remained a game out of the Big Nine Conference lead with a narrow 44-40 win over John Marshall in a girls basketball game Tuesday night at the John Marshall gym.
Mayo got a huge performance from senior center Lauren Ulsh with 26 points and the Spartans beat JM for the third time this season.
Mayo improved to 13-5, and 10-1 in the conference one game behind unbeaten Mankato East. JM is 7-12, 4-7 in the Big Nine.
"It was a pretty competitive game; both teams can probably play better but you never know how things will play out in a cross-town game," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said.
"Lauren Ulsh had a real nice game for Mayo; she is a good ball player and we needed to make things more difficult for her," Heiderscheit said.
Katelyn Rushton led JM with 14 points and four assists.
It's the third straight year that Mayo has gone 3-0 against JM in the regular season, and the Spartans have won nine straight in their intra-city series. JM beat the Spartans three times in the 2008-09 season.
JM has two more games this week, Thursday at home against Mankato West, and Friday on the road at Mankato East. Mayo is home Friday against Austin.

Big First Half, Rockets Cruise
ROCHESTER -- Rochester John Marshall held Albert Lea to 13 points in the first half and the Rockets cruised to an easy 50-32 win against visiting Albert Lea in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game Friday at the JM gym.
John Marshall won its second straight after a four-game losing skid and improved to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in the Big Nine Conference. Albert Lea dipped to 2-15, 1-9 in the conference.
Katelyn Rushton and Jamie Ruden both had 12 points to lead a balanced Rockets offense. Rushton and Allyson Sherden had seven rebounds each, and Ruden grabbed six.
"It was nice to have four players with six rebounds plus," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "We had a nice first half."
JM has what Heiderscheit calls a "big test" against Mayo on Tuesday at the JM gym.
"That will be a scorecard for us to measure where we are at."

Youth Served In JM's Win
AUSTIN -- Two eighth-graders stepped up with big scoring performances to power Rochester John Marshall to an easy 62-38 road win over Austin on Friday night.
Guard Nicole Fautsch scored a career-high 19 points, and center Jamie Ruden added 15 points and eight rebounds as the Rockets snapped a four-game losing streak in impressive fashion.
JM improved to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in the Big Nine Conference. Austin lost its second straight and is 7-8, 4-5 in the Big Nine.
"We played a good game; the young kids looked pretty good," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. Ruden led the Rockets to a decisive 38-23 rebounding advantage.
JM had just an eight-point lead at halftime but the Rockets dominated the second half while Austin struggled with its outside shooting. The Packers finished 1-of-15 from three-point range.
For Austin, junior center Jenna Svoboda had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Rockets Surrender Late Lead
ROCHESTER -- Rochester John Marshall is a very young girls basketball team with two eighth-graders and a freshman in the starting lineup, but that doesn't mean coach Terry Heiderscheit is looking for moral victories.
John Marshall surrendered a six-point lead at halftime and lost 58-56 to Owatonna in a Big Nine Conference game Tuesday night at the JM gym.
It was the fourth straight loss for JM, which is now 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the Big Nine. Owatonna is 9-5, 6-3 in the conference.
"This was a very disappointing loss as we had a lead in the second half and were on our home court," Heiderscheit said.
"We will keep working at it; this team has a lot of potential to play good basketball (but) the time is drawing close to start getting the job done."
Junior forward Katelyn Rushton led JM with 22 points and four steals. Eighth-grade guard Nicole Fautsch had 12 points and seven rebounds, and eighth-grade center Jamie Ruden had 10 rebounds and eight points.
JM had its hands full defensively with senior guard Sarah McCann who scored 28.

Edina Shows Strength Against JM
ROCHESTER -- Rochester John Marshall got a close-up look at one of the state's best girls basketball teams in a 69-39 non-conference loss Saturday afternoon at the JM gym.
Edina built a double-digit lead by halftime against the youthful Rockets and stretched it from there to improve to 14-0. The Hornets are ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA, behind Hopkins (14-0).
"Edina is a good well team; they put pressure on you and make the game difficult to play," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. His Rockets lost their third straight game and dipped to 5-10.
"We hope that we can learn to be more aggressive on offense and keep learning to play better defense against a top notch opponent," Heiderscheit added.
Eighth-grade center Jamie Ruden had a double-double for JM with 13 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs.
A pair of guards powered Edina, senior Katybeth Biewen with 21 points, and junior Vivian Enger with 13.
JM is 2-5 in the Big Nine Conference and returns to conference play Tuesday at home against Owatonna (8-5, 5-3).

ROCHESTER -- Winona pulled away in the second half to a 49-42 win over John Marshall in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game Friday at the JM gym.
The Rockets and Winhawks were tied at halftime, 23-23. But the second half belonged to Winona, which snapped a four-game losing skid.
Winona improved to 3-8 overall and 3-3 in the Big Nine. JM dropped its second straight and is 5-9 overall, 2-5 in the conference.
"Winona played hard and forced us into some situations we weren't comfortable in," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit explained. "We need to play more consistent fundamental basketball if we are going to win consistently."
Two Eighth-graders led JM, center Jamie Ruden led with 11 points and five rebounds, and guard Nicole Fautsch with 10 points and five rebounds.

Minnetonka, the No. 6 ranked team in Class AAAA, built a seven-point halftime lead and held it against the Rockets.
Minnetonka improved to 11-2 overall while JM's record dipped to 5-8.
"It was a pretty competitive game for us against a good ball club," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. "The kids competed hard, but there are still some things to improve on before we beat a team of that caliber."
Megan Haynes and Nicole Fautsch both scored 12 to lead JM, and Jaime Ruden had 13 rebounds to go with nine points.
For Minnetonka, junior guard Joanna Hedstrom scored 19 points, and eighth-grade center Courtney Fredrickson scored 18. Minnetonka made 17 of 20 free throws.

ROCHESTER -- John Marshall had enough points for the win by halftime in an easy 62-25 win over Faribault in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game Friday at the JM gym.
JM zipped to a 38-17 lead in the first half and cruised to its second straight conference win, after an 0-4 start in the conference. JM is 5-7 overall. Faribault dipped to 0-10, 0-5 in the Big Nine.
"We played a full game tonight and looked good," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. "We have had times when we played well for parts of games but tonight the girls played hard the whole game."
Eighth-grade forward Jamie Ruden scored 14 points to lead three JM players in double figures scoring. Junior center Allyson Sherden had 13 points and seven rebounds.

December 29th, vs Mayo (Rotary)
Spartans Claim Rotary Consolation Over Rockets
ROCHESTER -- Mayo closed out a solid tournament showing with an easy 20-point win over crosstown rival John Marshall. The Spartans went 2-1 in the tournament with only a six-point loss to Providence Academy in the first round.
"Having only the one loss to Providence Academy which is a ranked team (No. 1 in Class AA), I feel really good about how we did in the tournament," said Mayo coach Angie Meister. Her Spartans had a 25-10 lead at halftime.
Mayo improved to 7-3 overall after an 0-2 start. JM is 4-7 overall.
"I didn't think it would be a 20-point game," Meister said. "But I don't think we had quite as physical a game (on Wednesday night) as JM did, and that helped us; our legs were a little more fresh."
The Rockets couldn't contain Mayo's strong inside game. Senior 6-foot-1 senior Lauren Ulsh led the Spartans for the third straight tournament game with 16 points. She scored 17, 22 and 16 in the three games.
Also for Mayo, junior forward Rachael Doll had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and senior forward Anna Lundquist came off the bench for 10 points. Nine players scored for Mayo, which was 9-of-11 on free throws and didn't make a three-pointer.
Eight players scored for JM but none reached double figures. Eighth-grade center Jamie Ruden scored nine points, and senior Megan Haynes and eighth-grader Nicole Fautsch added six apiece. The Rockets also didn't make a three-pointer and were 9-of-16 from the line.
Both teams return to Big Nine Conference play next week. Mayo is at Mankato East on Tuesday, and JM is home Friday against Faribault.
December 28th, vs Century (Rotary)
Rockets Take Down Panthers
ROCHESTER -- The most exciting game of the second day of the Rotary girls tournament was the last, as John Marshall built a big second-half lead and then held on for a harrowing 47-44 win over Century in the consolation semifinals at Taylor Arena.
JM (4-6) snapped a six-game losing streak in this tournament after going 0-3 the last two years. The Rockets also avenged a 68-55 loss to Century (6-4) three weeks ago in their Big Nine Conference opener.
"I think early in the game the kids shot better (than in their first meeting)," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. "It feels good to win; that's progress."
JM scored the last six points before halftime to go ahead 30-20, and the Rockets pushed their lead to 38-23 in the first eight minutes of the second half. Junior guard Katelyn Rushton sparked JM early with 14 of her game-high 17 points in the first half.
But Century roared back on the strength of its full-court pressure defense. The Panthers outscored JM 16-4 to pull within a possession at 42-39 on a pair of Kanani Asuncion free throws with 1:47 left.
Century's Morgan Hartman sank two more free throws after a steal with 17 seconds left to cut JM's lead to 46-44. Hartman was then shook up in a collision with JM's Rushton, and Rushton made one more free throw with 11.5 seconds left to end the scoring.
Hartman was sprawled on the floor for several minutes before leaving the court with assistance. The junior guard finished with 12 points to lead Century. Junior forward Alecia Kupfer scored 10, and Asuncion added seven.
For JM, eighth-grade center Jamie Ruden scored 10, and junior center Allyson Sherden added eight.
December 27th, vs White Bear Lake (Rotary)
JM Falls To White Bear Lake In Rotary
ROCHESTER -- White Bear Lake was missing its leading scorer Alexis Foley, who is nursing a foot injury, and that was an equalizer against youthful John Marshall.
The Rockets, with two eighth-graders and a freshman on the court much of the time, kept it close until the final minutes before the Bears sealed it with rebounding and a few free throws.
White Bear Lake (6-3) missed 7-of-10 free throw attempts in the last minute to keep things interesting, but JM managed only one point in the last four minutes.
"We just don't rebound well enough to beat good teams right now; if we fix the rebounding issues we're right there in position to win a game like this," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit, whose team fell in the Rotary tournament opener for the fifth straight year. JM is 3-6 overall.
Without Foley, a senior guard averaging 16.5 points per game, the Bears got a huge performance from junior guard Tarah Hobbs with 20 points. She made five of WBL's eight three-point baskets, with four in the first half. Sophomore guard Jordyn Foley scored eight, and 6-foot junior center Dani Renner added six.
For JM. Junior guard Katelyn Rushton and junior forward Allyson Sherden led with eight points each, and freshman guard Kallie Fautsch scored seven. Eighth-graders Nicole Fautsch and Jamie Ruden played most of the game for the Rockets.
"There are just lapses in games where our inexperience shows," Heiderscheit said. "It's encouraging to play a team like that competitively, but the goal is never to go out and lose by nine points and feel good about it."
JM Takes It To Albert Lea
ALBERT LEA -- Eighth-grader Jamie Ruden scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Rochester John Marshall in a 65-51 win over Albert Lea in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game Thursday night.
Junior Katelyn Rushton added 20 points for the Rockets who snapped a three-game losing streak and notched their first conference win. JM is 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big Nine. Albert Lea is 0-9, 0-4 in the conference.
"We got the win and that is want we wanted," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. "We built a nice lead and then finished nice."
JM led 36-20 at halftime and never relinquised the lead.
