Cold Shooting Dooms Rockets

ROCHESTER — John Marshall once again struggled with its shooting Wednesday night and it cost them as they fell to Owatonna 46-27 in the quarterfinals of the Section One, Class AAAA girls basketball tournament.

Owatonna entered as the third seed, while JM was seeded sixth.

JM particularly struggled from three-point distance, hitting just 1 of 17 tries.  They didn't attempt a single free throw in the game.

"We didn't shoot well enough to win many games," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit, whose team finished its season 7-19 overall. "Owatonna has a good ballclub. They are a tough matchup for us with their size inside."

JM was led by junior forward Megan Byrne with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Owatonna was led by Trisha Benjamin with 16 points.

Owatonna advances to play second seeded Mayo on Saturday in the Section semi-finals.

JM Loses Battle At Free Throw Line

JM, despite a spate of turnovers late in the game, was still very much alive with 38 seconds left when Katelyn Rushton made a pair of free throws to cut Rockford's lead to 61-58. But a turnover by JM with 15 second left sealed their fate.

"We've got to take care of the ball better; we just made too many mistakes," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "They gave us chances to win the game, but we gave them back."

"We've just got to keep working."

Rockford got a big game from 5-foot-11 junior forward Shannon Ritten with 27 points, and senior guard Jacqueline Lommen scored 17. Rockford finished 26-of-37 from the line.

December 14th, vs Owatonna

JM Comeback Falls Short

ROCHESTER -- Rochester John Marshall erased a 17-point halftime deficit but still came up a basket short against visiting Owatonna in a Big Nine Conference game.

Owatonna rolled to a 27-10 lead in the first half. The Huskies' poor 1-of-10 free throw shooting allowed JM to get back in the game after halftime.

"It was a game of two halves," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "We looked lost in the first half, but we came out with a little fire in the second half and played pretty well."

Katelyn Rushton led JM with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Amelia Dzamalija had seven points and six boards.

Trisha Benjamin led the Huskies (4-3) with 16 points.

"We are doing some good things; our youth shows up at times but we are getting better," said Heiderscheit, whose Rockets are 1-4.

JM is at Faribault on Thursday, and at Edina on Saturday afternoon.

John Marshall built a seven-point lead by halftime and cruised to the Big Nine Conference win.

JM improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big Nine. West is 0-4, 0-3 in the conference.

"It was nice to crack the win column," said JM head coach Terry Heiderscheit. "We started slow and then played pretty well at times. We finished strong and made some big shots down the stretch.'

December 7th, vs Mayo

Spartans Prevail In OT

ROCHESTER -- Rochester Mayo overcame a disastrous night at the free throw line and staved off Rochester John Marshall 48-45 in overtime in girls basketball game at the John Marshall gym on Tuesday night.

The Spartans got a free throw from Lauren Ulsh in the closing minute of overtime to help clinch the win. JM had the ball for a final shot, but it didn't go.

Mayo improved to 2-0 overall and JM is 0-3. It was the Big Nine Conference opener for both teams.

"I give JM a lot of credit; they came out and put a lot of pressure on our inside players," Mayo coach Angie Meister said. "We were out of sync and it was because of their defense."

Mayo survived despite what Meister called a "brutal" 9-of-33 free-throw shooting effort. JM was a much more efficient 16-of-21 from the line.

"Both teams have areas to improve on," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "It was nice for our kids to be in a tight game and hopefully we can continue to improve."

The Rockets got a huge game from sophomore guard Katelyn Rushton with 24 points and six steals.

"Rushton really stepped up and hit some big shots from outside for JM," Meister said.

Lauren Ulsh was the only Mayo player in double figures with 14 points.

Mayo is still without 6-foot sophomore forward Rachel Doll, who was a starter last season and was the leading scorer and rebounder returning. But Doll has not suited up this season and her return is uncertain.

Both teams have road games Thursday. JM is at Mankato West, and Mayo has a non-conference game at Rosemount.

December 3rd, vs Farmington

Rockets Drop Home Opener

ROCHESTER -- Farmington held Rochester John Marshall to just 12 points in the first half and beat the Rockets 52-41 in a non-conference girls basketball game Friday night at the JM gym.

John Marshall played stronger in the second half, according to head coach Terry Heiderscheit, but couldn't overcome the Tigers' lead.

JM is off to an 0-2 start.

"Farmington has a nice team and they play hard," said JM coach Terry Heiderscheit. "We had more energy tonight and did some things better. But too many turnovers cost us some opportunities."

Katelyn Rushton led JM with 12 points and six rebounds. Christina Block added nine points and four steals. Farmington was led by junior guard Taylor Meyer with 18 points.

Next up for JM is the Big NIne Conference opener against Mayo at home on Tuesday.

Woodbury Pressure Too Much

WOODBURY -- Woodbury used strong pressure defense to take Rochester John Marshall out of its game and hand the Rockets a 71-35 non-conference loss.

JM trailed 40-16 at halftime.

"Woodbury has a good ball club and they really get after you — we did a lot of things poorly because of their pressure," JM coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "They will be one of the best defensive teams we face this year so we were able to get a feel for what we need to do better. We have some kids who can play and they will play better as we get deeper into the season."

JM had nobody hit double-figures.
